Healthy Position for Indians at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Indian talent to the fore

Having a rich wedge of world-class athletes in many categories such as archery, boxing, shooting, wrestling and weightlifting, India is rightly poised to finish on top of Commonwealth medals table this year. Last time (2010 edition) they finished second with a haul of 101 medals of which 39 were gold.

Last commonwealth finishes

In the 2002 and 2006 editions, India finished in 4th position with total medal haul of 69 and 49 respectively. India’s first ever Commonwealth games medal came in the wrestling welterweight category through Rashid Anwar who won the bronze in the year 1934.

Talented stars will shine in their events

Indian medal prospects rests with more than a handful of talented athletes unlike past years. Rise of the badminton star Saina Nehwal, the talented showing of shooters Jitu Rai and Ayonika Paul, and discuss thrower Heena Sidhu has heralded a new age in athletics and sports in India. One cannot forget our stalwart shooters Gagan Narang, Abhinav Bindra, Lajja Goswami, Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Meena Kumari.

Indian team events

Indian hockey team will perform at their best and one can expect a medal in this game. Their first game is slated for 25 July 2014 morning 9:00 AM versus Wales. In India’s group, we have Scotland, South Africa, Wales and Australia.

Individual star athletes

Boxing prospects Manoj Kumar, Shiva Thapa, Sumit Sangwan and Vijender Singh will be among the medals. In athletics, we have Vikas Gowda and Krishna Poonia in the discus throw event,  Shana Kumari in high jump, Tintu

Luka in 800m, Mayookha Johny in long jump to look forward to to bring in the medals.

Men and women’s relay team will also be having podium finishes. In swimming, Sandeep Sejwal and Katulu Ravi Kumar in weight lifting will also be among medal probable athletes. Commonwealth games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July to 3 August 2014.
